I love Fight Club
As I was reading an article about the existence of dark matter and dark energy in the universe (thanks to a chain of link jumps from a post by esteemed cartoonist and web/world commentator Jeffrey Rowland), I remembered that my car windows still needed to be closed before bed. After walking outside and closing the windows, I looked down the street, only to realize that my neighbors a few houses down were bare-knuckle boxing shirtless in the middle of the road. For a moment, I thought about joining them, but then remembered that I still had a few hours of lit. homework left to do before I could sleep. However, I did question our priorities as both individuals and members of society. On the one hand, I believe that, by instinct, we are predisposed to the desire for physical conflict and through such participation satisfy a rather distinctly human need. On the other hand, there are human beings spending lifetimes with the assistance of their colleagues looking through telescopes at distant galaxies in search of the origins of the universe. Which one of these activities is more relevant to our daily lives? I find it rather difficult to answer.
